If youโre looking for something entertaining to do, the library may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but you may want to give that another thought. Thatโs because libraries are not what they used to be, there are all kinds of things to check out and enjoy, beyond the great books.

Virtual book event at Literati Bookstore to focus on expressions, word games Monday night
They were really strict about it.โShirley Kobliner (left) and Harold Kobliner (right) were married for 65 years, 13 of which were spent collecting expressions for their book, "So To Speak: 11,000 Expressions Thatโll Knock Your Socks Off." During the free event with Literati, Kobliner will discuss how her parents assembled such a large collection and their process for organizing what they heard into 67 categories. She will also show some of the 351 illustrations in โSo to Speakโ and then treat audience members to some word games. Redford Township Library reopens for in-person browsing
REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. โ The Redford Township Library has reopened for limited in-person browsing after being closed due to COVID-19. Visitors are asked to keep their browsing time to 30 minutes, at most. Curbside pickup and the Friends of the Library Mini self-service bookstore on the first floor are still available. Whatโs still unavailableMeeting rooms, study rooms, the cafe and patron seating are still unavailable at the library. โWe are very happy to welcome you back to our building,โ the library announced in a release.

Present some poetry or listen to an author give a live reading courtesy of Crazy Wisdom Bookstore & Tea Room. With its second-floor tea room currently closed to visitors, the downtown Ann Arbor bookstore has been hosting informal poetry workshops and live readings through Zoom on Wednesday nights. Workshops are held on the second Wednesday of each month and hosted by the Crazy Wisdom Poetry Circle. Held on the fourth Wednesday of the month, live readings introduce audiences to the work of guest authors, essayists and poets. Links to the Zoom rooms are sent out the day of the event, according to the Crazy Wisdom Poetry Circle blog.
Ann Arborโs Literati Bookstore to host Bill Gates, Simon Winchester at virtual events
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Literati Bookstore has announced it will host Bill Gates and Simon Winchester this winter as part of its ongoing virtual events series. Tickets include access to the event and a hardcover copy of the book with a signed bookplate. At 8 p.m. on Feb. 25, Literati will join Seminary Co-op Bookstores for the Chicago Humanities Festival to host Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates. In โHow to Avoid a Climate Disaster,โ Gates outlines a wide-ranging plan for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in order to avoid a climate catastrophe. Literati Bookstore is at 124 E. New FIFA rules to protect female players' maternity rights
(AP Photo/Alastair Grant)GENEVA โ Female soccer players should soon get their maternity rights protected under new employment rules announced Thursday by FIFA. โThe idea is to protect female players before, during and after childbirth,โ FIFA chief legal officer Emilio Garcia said on a conference call. The rules are expected to be approved by the FIFA Council next month and would take effect on Jan. 1. โWe think these rules are part of common sense,โ he said of the move, which follow International Labor Organization standards on compensating maternity leave. At least eight weeks of the 14-week minimum maternity leave must be after the player gives birth.
Libyan man admits stabbing murders of 3 friends in UK park
LONDON โ A 26-year-old Libyan man pleaded guilty to murder Wednesday for stabbing three friends to death as they sat in an English city park. Khairi Saadallah admitted to three counts of murder and three of attempted murder for the June 20 attack in Reading, 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of London. James Furlong, 36, David Wails, 49, and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett, 39, were enjoying a warm Saturday evening in the city's Forbury Gardens park when they were stabbed. Each died from a single stab wound. The judge set a sentencing hearing for the week of Dec. 7.

New Humane Society of Huron Valley program encourages youth literacy with adoptable animals
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ Children in the Ann Arbor area can now practice their reading with an attentive (and possibly drooling) audience. Humane Society of Huron Valleyโs latest program, Reading Rescue, partners homeless animals in its care with children looking to read to a nonjudgmental partner. Participants can read their favorite book to HSHV animals on selected Wednesdays from 1-3 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to noon. Each session costs $10, and include covers a humane education lesson, a group read-aloud time and a dog meet-and-greet. Zuri Reads Initiative: 5-year-old Detroit girl encourages reading
Little Zuri loves reading one of her favorite books to her mother Raven. So together, the family created the Zuri Reads Initiative. The Zuri Reads Initiative has one overall goal. The Zuri Reads Initiative started in 2017 but the Word Up Wednesdays program started on Sept. 30. For Dr. Stanbrough and her husband starting this program was important not just for their child, but others across metro Detroit.
Reading garden restored at Detroit school after vandalism
DETROIT โ Students at Greenfield Union Elementary-Middle School went weeks without one of their favorite school activities which include reading. โThe manager at one of the Lowes stores just randomly sent me an email. The help doesnโt just come from the major franchise though, community members have also been working to make sure students have the best. Sisters take story time to Facebook Live so no child has to miss out
Five nights a week, the girls, who are two of five siblings, read to whomever would like to listen on Facebook Live. We thought it may be beneficial for children who dont get this luxury, a post on the girls Facebook page reads. When they presented their mom with the idea to read on Facebook Live, even though she doesnt want them to be on social media, she agreed it would be a great, positive way to help light the world. The girls Facebook page Zaria X Hailey has quickly grown to more than 10,000 followers. For parents who don't want their kids on Facebook or Instagram, the girls also post their stories on their YouTube page.
