JACKSON -- Baseball and softball teams will take the field Friday and Saturday for the Al Glick Classic, with games played around the Jackson area. Six softball teams are split into two brackets. In the Matt Soper Bracket are Bronson, Springport and Western. In the Don Wheeler Bracket are Jackson, Reading and Vandercook Lake. Baseball teams will be in the Doug Fracker Bracket and are Bronson, Jackson, Leslie, Lumen Christi, Quincy, Reading, Springport and Western.

That share of the title comes after Concord beat Union City 62-52 on Tuesday, leaving both the Yellowjackets and Comets 11-3 in conference having split their two meetings. We were able to get good looks.”Irelan and Wiler were the two main focal points of the Jonesville defense. Reading did not get another shot to fall until the 3:19 mark of the second when Irelan hit a 3-pointer, making it a 19-14 Jonesville lead. Jonesville held Reading to eight points in the third, six of those from center Zac Affholter.

READING -- A second half which saw seven lead changes on Saturday ended with the Reading boys basketball team pulling out a 43-42 win over Concord. After missing one shot, the Yellowjackets got the ball back when a Reading player accidently stepped on the sideline while grabbing a pass. That run was fueled with three straight steals at the other end from Hamilton, Affholter and Eli Irelan, and turned what had been an 18-17 Concord lead at the half into a 23-18 Reading lead. “Two of our league losses have been to Jonesville and Homer, and we’re all kind of bottled up there at the top, including Concord,” Reading coach Brett Kerspilo said. Concord answered with a 10-0 run, getting back-to-back 3-pointers from Sprague in the process, and retook the lead 30-26.

The Spartans seem to have just gotten stronger and stronger in the past week, with a 63-44 win over Pennfield and a 63-36 win over Union City. In the past week Stockbridge has picked up wins over Maple Valley and Lansing Christian. The Trojans certainly produced the most eye-popping result of the past week, a 70-4 win over Ann Arbor Central Academy in which East Jackson led 35-0 after the first quarter. Former reality show star Jon Gosselin is recovering after being bitten by a brown recluse spider in his bed at his Reading home in Berks County. “I woke after a night of music and fun and went to stand up only to fall back down on the bed. I was in excruciating pain,” he told the news outlet. The doctor immediately recognized the bite as coming from that deadly kind of spider. “My entire leg had swollen up from the cellulitis,” Gosselin told the news outlet.

HILLSDALE COUNTY, MI -- Michigan State Police troopers have safely located an elderly man reported missing near Reading. Jack Gibler, 84, has been found alive after being reported missing on the night of Aug. 27. Gibler, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, is believed to have walked away from a care facility, police said. An MSP Aviation unit located Gibler about a quarter-mile away from the care facility on Saturday morning, according to an MSP statement on Twitter. Starbucks said on Wednesday that it has resolved allegations from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission about alleged racial bias in its employee promotions, based on data from 2007 through 2011. The agreement with the federal agency was disclosed in Starbucks' third annual Civil Rights Assessment from the law firm Covington & Burling. A Starbucks spokesperson said that the company was engaged in on-and-off dialogue with the EEOC before reaching the agreement earlier this year. Earlier in March, Starbucks promoted Dennis Brockman to the role of global chief inclusion and diversity officer.

Redford Township Library reopens for in-person browsing
REDFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Redford Township Library has reopened for limited in-person browsing after being closed due to COVID-19. Visitors are asked to keep their browsing time to 30 minutes, at most. Curbside pickup and the Friends of the Library Mini self-service bookstore on the first floor are still available. What’s still unavailableMeeting rooms, study rooms, the cafe and patron seating are still unavailable at the library. “We are very happy to welcome you back to our building,” the library announced in a release.

With its second-floor tea room currently closed to visitors, the downtown Ann Arbor bookstore has been hosting informal poetry workshops and live readings through Zoom on Wednesday nights. Workshops are held on the second Wednesday of each month and hosted by the Crazy Wisdom Poetry Circle. Held on the fourth Wednesday of the month, live readings introduce audiences to the work of guest authors, essayists and poets. Links to the Zoom rooms are sent out the day of the event, according to the Crazy Wisdom Poetry Circle blog.
Ann Arbor’s Literati Bookstore to host Bill Gates, Simon Winchester at virtual events
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Literati Bookstore has announced it will host Bill Gates and Simon Winchester this winter as part of its ongoing virtual events series. Tickets include access to the event and a hardcover copy of the book with a signed bookplate. At 8 p.m. on Feb. 25, Literati will join Seminary Co-op Bookstores for the Chicago Humanities Festival to host Microsoft Co-Founder Bill Gates. In “How to Avoid a Climate Disaster,” Gates outlines a wide-ranging plan for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in order to avoid a climate catastrophe. Literati Bookstore is at 124 E. New FIFA rules to protect female players' maternity rights
(AP Photo/Alastair Grant)GENEVA – Female soccer players should soon get their maternity rights protected under new employment rules announced Thursday by FIFA. “The idea is to protect female players before, during and after childbirth,” FIFA chief legal officer Emilio Garcia said on a conference call. The rules are expected to be approved by the FIFA Council next month and would take effect on Jan. 1. “We think these rules are part of common sense,” he said of the move, which follow International Labor Organization standards on compensating maternity leave. At least eight weeks of the 14-week minimum maternity leave must be after the player gives birth.
Libyan man admits stabbing murders of 3 friends in UK park
LONDON – A 26-year-old Libyan man pleaded guilty to murder Wednesday for stabbing three friends to death as they sat in an English city park. Khairi Saadallah admitted to three counts of murder and three of attempted murder for the June 20 attack in Reading, 40 miles (64 kilometers) west of London. James Furlong, 36, David Wails, 49, and Joseph Ritchie-Bennett, 39, were enjoying a warm Saturday evening in the city's Forbury Gardens park when they were stabbed. Each died from a single stab wound. The judge set a sentencing hearing for the week of Dec. 7.
