The excitement of a return actually started last week as teachers prepared to welcome cohorts back to Romeo High School. New Today: 200 students in quarantine as Oxford High School returns to virtual learning amid COVID outbreakMonday was the day a return to full days, full-time face-to-face learning for high school and middle schoolers finally happened, which means 80 percent of the district’s students are physically back in class. Rick Boggio, an academy coach at Romeo High School also said Monday felt like the first day of school. The high school operates with a learning system called the Academies at Romeo in which students decide on an area of interest and attend micro-and macro-focused learning that gives real world experience in their area of interest.

Romeo, Mich. – An employee of Elder Ford of Romeo was allegedly caught on dashcam video trying to intimidate drivers in a customer’s retired police vehicle. At one point, the employee allegedly waited for a car to pass, made an illegal U-turn and accelerated behind a car, imitating an officer about to pull over a driver. Elder Ford of Romeo responded to the allegations on Facebook, saying they’re not “taking the video and actions involved very serious. The Wolverines and the Spartans are back to playing football this weekend, but with that comes some changes to our annual game time traditions. We can’t be in the stands, you can only watch from TV, and there’s no tailgating at the stadium allowed. ROMEO, Mich. – School districts are grappling with a desire to return to face-to-face learning while balancing a rise in COVID-19 cases throughout the state. Gretchen Whitmer has basically given leeway for districts to handle their learning models themselves. The district has worked with the Macomb County Health Department in terms of applying science and resources in contact tracing. According to the tracing information, no students have caught COVID-19 inside the school.

They are hosting a sunflower festival and are allowing guests to roam their fields and pick as many flowers as they want. Westview Orchards has been in Roys family for six generations, dating all the way back to 1813. Despite their long history, the sunflower festival is relatively new. The festival features five acres of sunflower fields allowing for some safe, socially distanced fun. Besides the sunflower festival, Westview Orchards also has u-pick produce, runs a farmers market on site and sells goodies like their award winning doughnuts.

Washington Township workers moved the rock Thursday morning to its new home at the Romeo District Library on Van Dyke. The billboard of goodwill for greetings, birthday wishes and celebrations had been a welcoming beacon into Washington Township. In June, “Black Lives Matter” was painted on the rock, which started a volley of racial slurs and a back-and-forth struggle to control the message on the rock. While plans were being made to move the rock by late 2021, the contentious back-and-forth made the land owners uncomfortable. The library accepted Romeo Rock with open arms.

The tiny Romeo community of about 3,600 people was rocked earlier this week when vandals wrote racial slurs on the rock, which is a landmark. The rock had been painted with the Black Lives Matter slogan before it was vandalized. Demonstrators Friday said their collective voice will drown out the few who vandalized their beloved rock.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The future of the “Romeo Rock” is up in the air as the owners fear the back-and-forth between people spray painting “Black Lives Matter” and others replacing it with racist messages could turn violent. For years, the rock has been on a private piece of property in Washington Township, just to the south of Romeo. But during the weekend, “Black Lives Matter” was pained on the rock, replaced with “all lives matter,” changed back to “Black Lives Matter” and then replaced with a racial slur, officials said. Now the rock has become a rallying place as regular citizens became civil rights warriors and sentries who guard the rock and the current message that Romeo will not tolerate racism. But the situation is complicated as the property is being torn up to make way for a new strip mall.

Romeo basketball player, Ava Muschong, dominated the 4Frenzy Fan Choice Awards in girls basketball. Ava's coach, Kathy Bosheers, is in her first year of coaching the Romeo varsity basketball team. Bosheers describes Ava as a hardworking athlete who continues to better herself throughout the offseason. When it came time for Ava to speak, she told her coach "I'm a basketball player, not someone that just plays basketball." Also, during their team warmups, Ava stays on the court until she makes one last shot before each game starts.
