Michigan police officer catches jewelry thief after stopping to help with flat tire
BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP, MI -- A police officer looking to help a stranded motorist stuck in the bitter cold made a substantial bust after he found roughly $75,000 in stolen jewelry in the car of the man he was trying to help. According to Fox 2 Detroit, an officer with the Brownstown Township Police Department was on patrol last month when he saw a motorist had blown his tire and needed assistance. While the officer looked in the car, he asked the man to wait in his patrol car as it was very cold outside that day. Police eventually determined the jewelry had been stolen from a UPS truck that was docked at the Southland Mall. The truck contained jewelry that was being sent out for repairs by the various jewelers in the mall.

BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Rebecca Hodge said it was a normal trip to the Brownstown Automatic Car Wash on Telegraph Road. “I’ve used this car wash before,” Hodge said. Hodge said that’s when a part of the car wash machine allegedly slammed into her car. “We don’t often get calls to rescue people from car wash,” Watson said. Child ejected from vehicle in I-75 crash
WAYNE COUNTY, MI – A child is expected to be OK after being ejected from a vehicle over the weekend in Brownstown Township. Michigan State Police troopers responded shortly after 3 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19 to southbound Interstate 75 and Sibley Road for a personal injury crash with an ejection in the Wayne County township near Detroit. Personnel from the Brownstown Fire Department assisted a child who’d been trapped underneath the vehicle in which she’d been a passenger, per information provided by Michigan State Police. The impact caused a rear hatch on the minivan to open, and a child laying across the vehicle’s rear bench seat to be ejected from the vehicle. The child was transported to Children’s Hospital in Detroit for treatment of what Michigan State Police called “very minor injuries.”Michigan State Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.

Three railroad crossings to be upgraded in 2021

The state program offers 60% funding for eligible improvements, with the railroad responsible for the remaining 40% of costs. The railroad and road agency are responsible for scheduling the construction work. Monroe County has the second-highest number of railroad crossings in the state behind Wayne County, said Janeen Abar, traffic and safety director for the road commission.

Brownstown resumes yard waste pickup
Brownstown Township is among the area communities where Waste Management has agreed to start the spring yard waste collections. BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP Brownstown Township Supervisor Andrew Linko has announced that Waste Management has agreed to resume yard waste pickup starting this week in the township. We have been working closely with Waste Management, as their business has been impacted by employees testing positive (for the coronavirus), and increased waste volumes as a result of the stay at home order, Linko said in a press release. Their services continue as scheduled and pickup of yard waste may not have been performed on the regular schedule of pickup. The drop-off is for township residents only, he said.

The victim’s father said Tuesday morning that his son, who is in his mid 20s, was stabbed about 20 times. He said his son was in an argument with another person inside the mobile home in the 25800 block of Bristol Drive when a fight broke out, leading to the stabbing. UPDATE: Man stabs coworker 20 times unprovoked, runs into woods to strip nakedThe victim lives in the home with his mother and a sibling. Meanwhile, the victim was rushed to a hospital where he is in critical condition but is expected to survive this attack.
Brownstown Cemetery Walk relates local history
Scores of visitors enjoyed the recent walk through Oak Ridge Cemetery in Brownstown Township hosted by the Brownstown Historical Society, Huron Township Historical Commission and Flat Rock Historical Society. They buried the airmen at Oak Ridge Cemetery and the Royal Canadian Legion Post 92 took on the responsibility for caring for the graves. Historical information about Oak Ridge Cemetery for the walk was provided by the Downriver Genealogical Society. It is not known exactly when the cemetery was first established, Debbie Galik, president of the Brownstown Historical Society, said in a press release. Oak Ridge Cemetery was sold to Memorial Counselors Inc. and over the years, was sold a few more times.

Work will be performed on four separate weekends, with one lane of Telegraph open in one direction while the other direction is closed and detoured via I-75 and Dix-Toledo Rd., MDOT said. Construction will be done on four separate weekends for each direction, said Diane Cross, a media spokeswoman for MDOT. The southbound lanes will be worked on first, closing for four consecutive weekends, depending on the weather, Cross said. Once the southbound lanes are done, then the northbound lanes will be closed for four consecutive weeks to complete work on that side of the road, with one southbound lane open.

BERLIN TOWNSHIP - A Brownstown Township man has been identified as the pedestrian who was killed in a crash about 1:05 a.m. Monday on I-75, just south of South Huron River Drive. The Monroe County Sheriffs Office reports that Charles D. Long, 53, was struck by multiple vehicles in the aftermath of the accident. After that collision, the truck continued southbound, coming to a stop along the right shoulder of southbound I-75. The circumstances of how and why Long was outside of his vehicle are not yet known; but deputies reported he was struck by southbound multiple vehicles. All southbound lanes of I-75 in that area were closed until about 6:30 a.m., according to Michigan Department of Transportation traffic alerts.
