LANSING, Mich. – As the total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases sharply rises throughout Michigan, the state’s top medical official revealed concerning trends in a region-by-region breakdown. In the Kalamazoo Region, officials said there are 211 positive cases per million people per day and a 6.7% positivity rate. The Grand Rapids Region is at 155 cases per million people per day and 4.6% positivity, Khaldun said. Michigan’s lowest case rate is in the Traverse City Region, where officials report 62 cases per million people per day and a positivity rate of 3%, according to Khaldun. Both the case rate and the test positivity rate are increasing over the past two weeks in that ration, however.

The decision comes with stringent COVID-19 safety guidelines, headlined by two main statistics the conference will monitor throughout the season:Two COVID-19 statsThe two stats outlined in the Big Ten release are team positivity rate and population positivity rate. Big Ten officials define population positivity rate and the “number of COVID-19 positive individuals divided by the total population at risk." Team test positivity rate and population positivity rate thresholds will be used to determine recommendations for continuing practice and competition, officials said. All COVID-19 positive student-athletes will have to undergo comprehensive cardiac testing to include labs and biomarkers, ECG, Echocardiogram and a Cardiac MRI. Following cardiac evaluation, student-athletes must receive clearance from a cardiologist designated by the university for the primary purpose of cardiac clearance for COVID-19 positive student-athletes.

Michigan State football team quarantines after positive coronavirus (COVID-19) tests
EAST LANSING, Mich. Members of the Michigan State University football team are quarantining or isolating after the latest round of coronavirus (COVID-19) testing revealed positive tests, the school announced. Early results from the tests taken over the last week revealed a second staff members as well as a player tested positive on Thursday, officials said. Everyone on the football team has been instructed to quarantine or isolate for 14 days, according to the university. As part of the athletic departments return to campus policy, student-athletes quarantine when coming into close contact with an individual who tests positive for COVID-19. Surveillance testing of student-athletes was completed on Wednesday, July 22 as previously planned, and will be repeated prior to their clearance to return to workouts.

DETROIT The Big Ten announced Thursday that fall sports teams, including football, will only play against conference opponents this year if there is a season. Fall sports affected by this announcement include football, mens and womens soccer, womens volleyball, field hockey and mens and womens cross country. Big Ten officials said this decision was made based on the advice of medical experts amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Michigan was scheduled to play at Washington and host Ball State and Arkansas State in its three out-of-conference games this season. Michigan State was scheduled to visit BYU and host Toledo and Miami (Florida) in nonconference games.
