Michigan State will officially be opening its 2022-23 season offshore. The Spartans will play Gonzaga on an aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, docked in San Diego, on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. CBS reported last month that Michigan State and Gonzaga were in “advanced discussions” to play the game. “This game is big for our program, for Michigan State University and for the Big Ten Conference.”Only one other aircraft carrier game has been played in the 11 years since Michigan State’s: Syracuse and San Diego State played on an aircraft carrier the following year, but the game was postponed two days due to rain. Two other scheduled aircraft carrier games the same year were postponed due to poor floor conditions.

HARTLAND, MI — Fifty tons of soil contaminated with toxic PFAS chemicals from an excavation site in northern Michigan spilled across the highway and into a roadside ditch last month when a hazardous waste truck crashed on Veterans Day. Southbound U.S. 23 at Exit 70 near Hartland was closed for three hours while the polluted soil was put back into the undamaged truck, which then delivered it to the landfill. The driver was not injured and no other vehicles were involved in the crash, according to Mark Kinkade, a public affairs officer with the U.S. Air Force. The polluted soil was dug from the old fire training area No. The Air Force is currently expanding a groundwater treatment system at the site that’s scheduled to begin operating in May.

Johnson and two other Black men were three of the only remaining Black residents in Owosso in the 1800s after a group of white residents chased Black residents out of town during a dispute in 1871. Johnson, Walter Toyer and Billy Byerly were not threatened by the group and decided to stay, area historian and Owosso Rotary Club member Tom Cook said. The Civil War veteran was born a slave in Tennessee in 1833 and made his way to Michigan before enlisting to fight in the Civil War and later settling in Owosso, where he owned a downtown barbershop for many years. Someone called 911 to say a vehicle was shot by people in a Chevrolet Silverado around 12:12 a.m., Nov. 11, near the intersection of S. Jackson and Griswold streets, Director of Jackson Police and Fire Services Elmer Hitt said. Two guns were found in the vehicle, a 9mm rifle and a .380 caliber handgun, Hitt said. The 21-year-old and 16-year-old were arrested for felonious assault and carrying a concealed weapon. The adults were lodged at the Jackson County Jail and the minor was taken to the Jackson County Youth Center.

DETROIT – Tuskegee Airman, Lt. Col. Harry Stewart, lost a comrade during the pandemic. Stewart made sure the first Veterans Day without his fellow airman wouldn’t be impeded by the coronavirus. First Lt. Vincent Dean and Stewart were 18 years old when they enlisted in 1943 during World War II. Woodland Mall prepares for holiday shopping season amid coronavirus pandemic

Dingell laments over 4,000 veteran deaths from COVID-19, says nation can do better

Ann Arbor Parks and Rec offers free golf for veterans on Wednesday
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Dust off those clubs and tee up! On Wednesday, veterans can play a free round of golf at Huron Hills Golf Course courtesy of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreations in honor of Veterans Day. Participants can play five-and-six-hole rounds for free and receive a free power cart rental. Golfers wanting to play 11 holes, the maximum allowed right now at HHCG due to construction, will just pay $5. Golf course construction began in September and consists of wetland creation and creek restoration to an area that will be called Benz Creek in the near future.

The Veterans Day snowstorm in Metro Detroit isnt done yet. Former Michigan State football star and Detroit Lions first-round pick Charles Rogers has died. Rogers, 38, was a Saginaw native who broke several receiving records while playing football at Michigan State University between 2001 and 2002. A century ago, Nov. 11 was known as Armistice Day. That changed in 1952 to become Veterans Day, which has become a touchstone for everyone to remember the sacrifices made by men and women who serve the country.
Veteran brutally beaten at bus stop on Detroits east side
Vietnam veteran Phillip Ramsey, 70, is spending Veterans Day trying to recuperate after he said he was forced to fend off five young attackers who jumped him at a bus stop. Teeth gone, said Ramseys daughter, Sheila Calvin. I dont even know whats going through his mind right now because I called him this morning and he just started crying, Calvin said. I dont want to hear, My son was perfect, my son wanted to do that. I want all five of them caught. There was actually one young woman, whose name is Danielle Mullins, who was brave enough to come to Ramseys aid.

There were no snow-related school closings this morning, but were starting to see early dismissals. Most of Metro Detroit is in a Winter Weather Advisory for 3-6 of snow creating dangerous travel all day today and it lasts until midnight. Parts of the thumb in our North Zone is under a Winter Storm Warning for 5-10 of snow and blowing snow. Be careful driving today, and be watchful of those other cars out there that may not heed our warnings.
Snow cant stop special Veterans Day ceremony in Berkley

Snow couldnt stop a special ceremony in Berkley to honor those who made great sacrifices. John Fulks, of Berkley VFW Post 9220, did the honors. And so today we honor all of our veterans who unselfishly placed their lives in the line of our freedom, Fulks said. You want to do what you can, and thats why were here.Fulks said Veterans Day is for everyone, and he believes todays soldiers have it tougher than he did.

Thousands walk Michigan Avenue for Detroit Veterans Day Parade
DETROIT Monday is Veterans Day -- a day to honor the brave people who serve our country in the armed forces. The 14th annual Detroit Veterans Day parade was held Sunday down Michigan Avenue. Several events lasted throughout the day in whats called the Armed Services Salute, showcasing dogtags from fallen soldiers. The parade means a lot to the 60,000 veterans living in Detroit. "He wanted to fulfill our awesome Detroit cause theyre so many veterans,Its only one percent serving the rest of the 99 percent," Chatman said.

Veteran to run 22 hours on Belle Isle to raise awareness for veteran suicides
DETROIT Ben Davis is a Metro Detroit military veteran who has overcome tremendous injuries to defy the doctors who said he couldnt walk normally again. Monday, Veterans Day, Davis is running for 22 hours to raise money to help other veterans.
