Kwame Kilpatrick files to be removed from supervised release, asks judge to clear $1.5M debt

Ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is seeking to be released from supervised release nearly two years after his 28-year prison sentence was commuted by former President Donald Trump. As part of the motion, Kilpatrickโ€™s lawyer, Brandon Byrd argued that Kilpatrick has learned from his mistakes and is making a difference in his community. Since his release, Kilpatrick has worked as an ordained minister and has ministered in Detroit among other places. Byrd argued that none of that money has been applied to Kilpatrickโ€™s debt, despite a court judgment calling for the liquidated assets to be applied to Kilpatrickโ€™s owed restitution. However, the federal government eventually stepped in and filed a lawsuit to prevent the money from going to the Kilpatrick family and to be applied to debts owed by Kwame Kilpatrick.

Would setting Kilpatrick free help or hurt Trump in Michigan?

So let me get this straight: Democrats bankrupted Detroit, ruined its schools & destroyed black families...and blacks protest Trump 2day? "I do know that if Trump gave him clemency before the election, where do you think he'd help Trump's campaign at?" "It's true that the Black Detroit vote would help Trump in a "yuge" way: Trump won Michigan by less than 11,000 votes, a razor-thin margin. And in 2016, Black voters were unimpressed by both main candidates. Kilpatrick served as mayor from 2002 to 2008 just before Detroit became the largest municipality to declare bankruptcy.
