OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – On Monday, Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald announced her office’s decisions in 22 juvenile lifer cases after completing a review under the terms of the Hill v. Whitmer (2020) class action settlement. The Hill settlement called for prosecutors to reconsider each of those sentences and commit to a timeline for resentencing eligible individuals. Of the 27 Oakland County based juvenile lifer cases eligible for review under the Hill settlement, McDonald withdrew motions filed by former Oakland County prosecutor Jessica Cooper for the reimposition of life without parole in 20 cases. Detroit mother of hit-and-run victim becomes advocate for other grieving families
DETROIT – Police are still investigating several fatal hit-and-run cases that have yet to be solved. One Detroit mother knows the pain of losing a loved and is hoping that no one else has to experience something similar. Detroit police are still looking for the drivers responsible for multiple fatal hit-and-run incidents across the city, including Emory’s case. On May 15, a 46-year-old was killed while riding a moped near Military and Lindsdale streets. Michigan COVID-19 deaths just shy of 12,600
LANSING, Mich. – Michigan averaged about 3,000 new coronavirus cases a day from Thursday through Saturday, the state health department said. The state also reported 265 additional deaths from COVID-19, including 211 from days or weeks ago that were confirmed through a records check. Michigan is close to 12,600 deaths since last March. “We do expect our case numbers and deaths to come down as the vaccine is distributed to the most vulnerable, those in healthcare facilities,” Khaldun said. Denice Chandler lost her husband and father to COVID-19. I would have never thought when I dropped him off at the hospital that it would have been the last time that I will see my husband, Chandler said. Richard, along with her father, will be remembered Monday as a part of a powerful memorial on Belle Isle in which 14 funeral processions are set to drive past nearly 900 photos of loved ones lost to COVID-19. I will forever keep this memory of what the city has done for all of our families, Chandler said.

DETROIT – The city of Detroit is set to unveil a collage image with the faces of 900 of the city’s COVID-19 victims. The city was hit particularly hard by the coronavirus in March and April. Overall, the Detroit Health Department reports 13,522 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 1,507 deaths related to the disease since March. The collage of victim’s faces will be used during the memorial drive on Monday, Aug. 31, Mayor Mike Duggan’s office said. Families of victims had been encouraged to share photos for the collage.

SOUTHGATE, Mich. – The Wayne County Public Health Division announced Wednesday it has confirmed a total of five cases of COVID-19 linked to a wedding reception held on Saturday, July 18, at Crystal Gardens Banquet Hall in Southgate. More people may have been at risk of contracting and exposing others to COVID-19 as more than 100 people were in attendance for the indoor reception, according to Wayne County health officials. Attendees of the reception at the Crystal Gardens are encouraged to call the Wayne County Health Division at 734-727-7078 to report their contacts, get tested by a healthcare provider as soon as possible, and self-quarantine at home as directed. The confirmed positive individuals have been instructed to self-isolate until cleared by public health in accordance with CDC guidance, health officials said. “The safety and protection of Wayne County residents is our top priority,” said Carol Austerberry, Wayne County Health Officer.
