Ann Arbor Public Schools announce tentative dates for in-person graduation ceremonies
ANN ARBOR โ In a recent update, Ann Arbor Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jeanice Kerr Swift announced that the district is moving forward with plans to hold in-person graduation ceremonies this year. Last year, all ceremonies were canceled due to concerns over the then-new coronavirus pandemic and each high school organized drive-thru events and virtual ceremonies for its seniors. Swift confirmed that Huron, Pioneer and Skyline high schools will have traditional graduation ceremonies outdoors at Eastern Michigan Universityโs stadium. Tentative dates for the three ceremonies:Huron High School: Wednesday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m.Pioneer High School: Thursday, June 3 at 6:30 p.m.Skyline High School: Monday, June 7 at 6:30 p.m.Community and Pathways high schools are also planning to hold outdoor commencement ceremonies. In addition to the graduation update, Swift announced that all Class of 2021 students will receive a celebratory yard sign like last year.
Annual high school talent show in Ann Arbor goes virtual
ANN ARBOR โ Pioneer Theatre Guildโs 19th annual FutureStars talent show will still take place this year, but with a twist. Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, all performances from the citywide talent search featuring students from Ann Arborโs public high schools will be going virtual. But to keep the show true to form, all 19 solo performances will be pre-recorded onstage in Pioneer High Schoolโs Schreiber Auditorium -- the eventโs venue in years past. Skyline High School senior and second year FutureStars participant Nate Frison said that the transition to virtual practice sessions was very smooth. Free COVID testing returns to Ann Arborโs Pioneer High School on Saturday

Phillip)ANN ARBOR โ No cost COVID testing will return to Pioneer High School on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. According to the Washtenaw County Health Department, the free pop-up site in the schoolโs parking lot will be offering weekly testing. All positive tests will be sequenced for the B.1.1.7 COVID-19 variant, which is known to be present in Washtenaw County. The event is supported by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the Washtenaw County Health Department, HONU Management Group and Ann Arbor Public Schools. ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ On Sunday, community members can be tested for the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 for free at Pioneer High School. Testing will be done from noon to 4 p.m. through polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests at a drive-thru testing site. More: See how the PCR test works here. Those going to the drive-thru should enter the Pioneer parking lot from Main Street and should not line up before the event starts. The Klemmer family has released eight rap videos on Facebook since the pandemic began. SOUTH LYON, Mich. โ The Klemmer family has been making waves on Facebook with their original rap videos that theyโve been creating since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic. Dad Bobby Klemmerโs oldest daughter, Sienna, was given a homework assignment in the spring using an online vocabulary tool that engages children through hip-hop. โOne of the options was to write a rap,โ said Klemmer. They also did one for Motherโs Day, one to celebrate teachers, a video to encourage people to vote, and, most recently, a Christmas rap.
Ann Arbor high schoolers to perform 8 virtual plays this weekend
ANN ARBOR โ The Pioneer Theatre Guild will be performing a series of short plays via livestream this weekend and tickets are free. In a year marked by remote learning, the PTG has also adapted the way they perform. The group dedicated the video to the outgoing senior class whose final season was marred by the pandemic. This weekend, the performances are inspired by the Play at Home project -- a national effort by a group of theatre companies to commission a series of short plays for local communities. Even through the Zoom screen, I still felt included and connected to those that were a part of the project.

Ann Arbor Huron, Pioneer football teams suspend activities after confirmed COVID-19 case
ANN ARBOR โ Ann Arbor Public Schools announced on its website on Thursday that a Huron varsity football player has tested positive for COVID-19. According to the notice, AAPS was made aware of a probable case on Oct. 6 and reported it to the Washtenaw County Health Department. All Huron varsity football activities and games through Oct. 16 have been canceled. Huron played against Pioneer last Friday, and due to potential contact during the game, all Pioneer varsity football activities have been suspended. AAPS said it is working with the Washtenaw County Health Department on contact tracing with members of the Pioneer team.
