The Michigan high school winter season is coming to a close, with the basketball seasons heading into the final weeks. The top high school players in the Saginaw area have risen to the challenge, putting up some big numbers in some of the biggest games of the season.

Make that two recruits Michigan State added for the next cycle in one day. Andrew Depaepe, a 2023 four-star defensive lineman from Pleasant Valley High School in Bettendorf, Iowa, announced his commitment to the Spartans via Twitter on Wednesday afternoon. That came after 2023 three-star offensive lineman Johnathan Slack from Detroit Martin Luther King Jr. High School committed Wednesday morning. His other offers include Michigan, Iowa, Iowa State, Washington and Minnesota. NEWAYGO COUNTY, MI – School and police officials say that threats Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Newaygo High School and Middle School have been deemed not credible. The reports led Newaygo Public Schools to go into “secure mode,” with school doors locked and students remaining in classrooms. “After what happened Monday, and then today, I’m ready to pull my kids out of public schools,” she said. Andres said that the threats, coming on the heels of the Nov. 30 shooting at Oxford High School, have to stop. “We want our students of the Newaygo Public Schools District to be safe and to have a wonderful educational career, one which they deserve,” Wright said at the press conference.

OTISVILLE, MI -- LakeVille Middle School and High School went into a soft lockdown Monday morning after a student, who has since been found safe, exited the building and left campus on foot. As of 11:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 25, the student was found according to an announcement on the LakeVille Community Schools Facebook page. The district worked with local law enforcement and the student’s family to search for the missing student. The lockdown was put into effect to allow for a search to take place as a precautionary measure. Both the middle school and high school are out of lockdown.

The Grosse Pointe South boys basketball team’s playoff run was cut short in Thursday’s district semifinals when they took on Martin Luther King Jr. High School. The Blue Devils managed to cut King’s lead down to single digits in the fourth quarter, but the Crusaders hung on to a 56-40 victory. Godfrey-Lee is the only Kent County school district with a tax proposal on the Nov. 3 ballot. Public schools must levy the 18 mills to receive their full per-pupil funding from the state. If approved, Tri County schools would levy approximately $2,317,000 in 2021 for its students.
