43rd annual rally against sexual violence returns April 1 in Ann Arbor

AFC Ann Arbor withdraws men’s season for second year due to pandemic
ANN ARBOR – AFC Ann Arbor officials announced on Tuesday that its men’s team will not participate in this year’s USL League Two season due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The club is currently consulting with the United Women’s Soccer division’s leadership to determine whether or not the women’s team will compete this year. “From the beginning of the pandemic, we have been precautious about our return to play and have followed the guidance and advice of our state’s top medical expert, Dr. Joneigh Khaldun,” Bilal Saeed, Chair of AFC Ann Arbor said in a statement. “Under these guidelines and current state restrictions, we cannot in good conscience bring players in for a league season,” the club said in a statement. “We understand AFC Ann Arbor’s decision to withdraw from participation in the 2021 League Two season,” USL Vice President Joel Nash said in a statement.
Michigan officials urge mask wearing even after COVID vaccination

Officials with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services are encouraging people, even those who have been vaccinated against the virus, to wear face coverings to prevent COVID-19 spread and infection. The data shows the importance of wearing a mask correctly and making sure it fits snugly over the mouth and nose. Officials recommend doubling up by wearing a cloth mask over a medical procedure mask, a nylon covering over a mask or a mask fitter. AdMichigan residents in need of a face mask can contact their local Community Action Agency or local DHHS office for one.

First responders leave bags of face masks on Dearborn porches to help mitigate spread of COVID-19
DEARBORN, Mich. – The Dearborn Police Department and the Dearborn Fire Departments are leaving bags of face masks on the porches of Dearborn households. The first responders are starting in areas of Dearborn with the highest number of confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) cases. Police and fire began delivering the masks on Wednesday. They are leaving 10 masks per household on porches in east Dearborn neighborhoods and the “geographic area commonly known as The South End of Dearborn.”I assure residents that these masks are legitimate and safe to use Mayor John B. New from CDC: Face masks should be worn in all indoor settings, except at home
On Friday, Dec. 4 the CDC published in a weekly report updated guidelines that recommend “universal use of face masks” as COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths climb across the nation at dangerous rates. “Face mask use is most important in indoor spaces and outdoors when physical distance of 6 feet (or less) cannot be maintained,” the CDC’s report reads. Read more: What the CDC says about face masks -- a refresherThe updated guidelines come amid recent research that shows face masks not only prevent a person from spreading COVID-19, but they also provide some protection to the wearer -- though to a lesser extent. In light of the new guidelines, the CDC is encouraging state and local governments to “issue policies or directives mandating universal use of face masks in indoor (nonhousehold) settings,” and to provide face masks to populations in need to help prevent the spread of COVID. Majority of the CDC’s previously-issued mask guidelines have not changed, however, including what types of masks to wear and how to wear them.
Republican state lawmakers don’t seem willing to back Michigan governor’s request for bipartisan mask law
Gretchen Whitmer is still looking to the Republican-controlled legislature to help strengthen safety measures in response to rise in COVID-19 cases. Whitmer is requesting the Legislature to enact a state law that would require mask wearing -- however, it is unknown if one is coming. Currently, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services have required face masks to be worn in public places under an emergency health order. With COVID-19 case numbers continuing to rise and virus hospitalizations increasing, Whitmer and health officials say a rise in COVID deaths is expected. Dr. Khaldun: Michigan seeing 5 times more COVID-19 cases per day than early September
LANSING, Mich. – Michigan reported a new daily record of COVID-19 cases in Michigan -- 5,710 new cases along with 51 new reported deaths, including 26 from a review of past vital records. “We’re seeing more than five times the number of new cases per day now than we saw early September,” said Chief Medical Executive Dr. Joneigh Khaldun. If we don’t change our behaviors, we could be seeing up to 100 deaths a day by the end of December," she said. Warren auto workers concerned about coronavirus procedures at FCA plant
WARREN, Mich. – A photo taken at a local automotive plant is raising questions about how coronavirus procedures are being handled, if at all. A concerned worker at the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) assembly plant in Warren sent a photo to Local 4 that shows a hallway packed wall-to-wall with employees -- with some shoulder-to-shoulder. The photo clearly shows a lack of social distancing among plant workers. In response, FCA sent a statement to Local 4 to shed light on what occurred inside of the Warren plant Tuesday. "Masks are distributed to plant employees once they have cleared the thermal imaging station to ensure they have the proper protection before entering the plant floor.

Twitter blocks tweet from Trump adviser downplaying masks
NEW YORK – Twitter blocked a post Sunday from an adviser to President Donald Trump who suggested that masks do not work to stop the spread of the coronavirus. Scott Atlas, who joined the White House in August as a science adviser, had tweeted “Masks work? The tweet violated a Twitter policy that prohibits sharing false or misleading misinformation about COVID-19 that could lead to harm, a company spokesperson said. The policy bans statements that have been confirmed to be false or misleading by experts such as public health authorities. Researchers have concluded that masks can control the spread of the virus, and public health experts have urged the public to wear them.
Are face masks required to vote in person in Michigan for Nov. 3 General Election?
But are Michigan voters required to wear face masks to the polls? The answer is no, Michigan voters are not required to wear face masks while voting in person for the General Election on November 3. Michigan voters who feel uncomfortable voting in person amid the pandemic now have the option to vote by mail using an absent voter ballot. The state of Michigan mailed absentee voting applications to all registered Michigan voters in May for this year’s August and November elections. Washtenaw County Health Department, school administrators: ‘With your help, we can all return to school’
ANN ARBOR – Nearly 30 school administrators across Washtenaw County have signed a joint letter with the Washtenaw County Health Department encouraging community members to help limit the spread of COVID-19 so that in-person instruction can be phased in throughout the fall and winter. The Health Department and Washtenaw County schools have been jointly monitoring COVID-19 data, trends, best practices and how schools across the state that have reopened are faring. “We’re asking everyone in Washtenaw County to do their part to keep the spread of illness low," said Loveluck. Being outdoors in an open space is safer, and the Washtenaw County Health Department recommends avoiding being in small rooms with poor airflow with non-household members. This means responding promptly to school and health officials and answering questions honestly - to protect everyone’s health.
Wayne County issues emergency order to preserve coronavirus precautions
The Wayne County Health Department issued an emergency public health order on Oct. 8 requiring residents to continue taking steps to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Wayne County officials say requirements listed in Thursday’s order essentially carry on health and safety precautions previously ordered by Michigan Gov. The Wayne County Health Department is reinforcing these measures by deeming them active and enforceable in the county through their own emergency order. Officials say schools under the jurisdiction of the Wayne County Health Department are also required to continue following the state’s Return to School plan. Wayne County officials say the emergency order is effective immediately and is expected to remain in effect until at least Oct. 23.
Michgan Senate to return to Lansing, address coronavirus-related orders
LANSING, Mich. – Michigan Senate is set to go into session Thursday and take up coronavirus-related orders nearly a week after Michigan Supreme Court ruled to strike down Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive orders. In a split decision, the state Supreme Court overturned a 1945 law that Whitmer had been using to kick out executive orders with no checks and balances from Legislature. The court also said in a unanimous decision that all of Whitmer’s executive orders past April 30 are not valid because there was no input from the state Legislature. However, days of Whitmer issuing executive orders are over unless it’s a deal reached with the Legislature.
Making sense of Michigan’s mask orders following state Supreme Court decision
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Supreme Court ruling on Friday to strike down Gov. Whitmer now has Robert Gordon, director of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, reinstating mask requirements and establishing rules using a different law. The two looked to a law developed after the Spanish Flu a century ago, allowing the health department director to create his or her own orders regarding gathering sizes. The Mackinac Center has two cases pending against the governor and the health department director, having won both. Wright believes Whitmer is trying to extend an order that been ruled unconstitutional when it never came up in the nearly four hours of oral arguments before the state Supreme Court.

A new emergency health order is requiring Oakland County residents to wear face masks anytime they leave their home in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Oakland County Health Officer Leigh-Anne Stafford issued an emergency health order Saturday that requires residents to wear face masks or coverings at any location apart from their home. “Oakland County was hit hard by COVID-19 and the virus is still in our communities,” Stafford said. In Oakland County masks will continue to be mandatory by order of our health experts. Face mask check: Are you being hygienic enough?
By now, wearing a face mask when you’re out and about or around crowds of people should be nothing new. Here’s what the WHO had to say about using a fabric mask:Wash your hands before putting on the mask. If you need to use the mask again, hold it at the elastic loops when removing it from the bag. If hot water is not available, wash the mask in soap or detergent and room-temperature water, followed by either boiling the mask for 1 minute OR; by soaking the mask in 0.1% chlorine for 1 minute and thoroughly rinsing the mask with room-temperature water (there should not be any toxic residue of chlorine on the mask). Make sure you’re continuing to socially distance yourself from people who aren’t in your household, keep washing those hands and try to avoid touching your face as much as possible.
How to choose a mask for your new-normal workout routine
If you want to get back to the gym this fall, you’re going to have to add a few masks to your usual workout gear. Fitness and nutrition expert Jody Trierweiler had a few tips for what to keep in mind when bringing a mask to the gym. Her number one tip is to avoid masks that draw in moisture, since moisture breeds bacteria. Instead, Trierweiler says to find masks that are breathable, lightweight, and that are made using moisture wicking fabrics. She also recommends that you stay away from neck gaiter style masks, which are worn around the neck and pull up over the nose.
Why are Michigan student athletes mandated to wear masks?
DETROIT – In a press conference Thursday, Local 4′s Rod Meloni asked what information was being used to support the determination that masks would be required for student athletes on the field. It’s important to change out masks for a fresh one when sensible, or to use a fabric that wicks moisture and dries quickly. Executive Order 180 requires face coverings to be worn by student athletes when actively participating, except during cross country, golf, tennis, swimming and diving. This includes all times during active participation and all times during non-active participation when six feet of physical distance cannot be maintained. Face coverings must be worn by coaches, medical staff, game event staff, members of the media and spectators.

GROSSE POINTE, Mich. – With fall sports back on track, players and coaches are adjusting to wearing masks while playing after an Executive Order mandated masks be worn during play. Gretchen Whitmer almost a week after she allowed contact sports to resume practices this week and games starting next week. Maccagone said his biggest issue was what to do with his mouth guard, which attaches to his helmet face mask. In response to the mask mandate, members of the group, Let Them Play, started a petition, calling the masks during play “incredibly dangerous” and want the order removed. Whitmer took questions Thursday about the mask order including which science she was using to back up the order.

Michigan health officials: Schools should require masks for all students
LANSING, Mich. Michigans top health official is calling on superintendents to require students to wear face masks this fall amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Gretchen Whitmer released guidelines for schools to reopen this fall, which do require face masks to be worn by most students during most occasions. Under Whitmers MI Safe School Roadmap, schools whose regions are in phase four of the pandemic must require students in grades 6-12 to wear face masks in classrooms. The MI Safe Schools Roadmap does require all school staff members to wear face coverings at all times, except during mealtimes. Whitmer signed an executive order requiring children and workers to wear face masks at Michigan childcare centers and camps.
Catholics in Upper Peninsula required to wear masks at Mass
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Face masks are mandatory for people who attend indoor Mass in the Upper Peninsula, starting Saturday, the region's Roman Catholic bishop said. “Though the scientific evidence on the effectiveness of face masks in limiting the spread of COVID‐19 is still inconclusive, there is sufficient evidence to judge prudently that we should wear face masks to limit the spread of the disease,” Marquette Bishop John Doerfler said. A mask may be uncomfortable, he said, “but it is a sacrifice that we can make out of love for each other.”Doerfler oversees all Catholic churches in the Upper Peninsula. The Marquette Diocese had recommended masks when Masses resumed in May. The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in Michigan has risen to 81,621 as of Saturday morning, including 6,199 deaths, state officials report.
Study finds multiple layers make cloth masks more effective
DETROIT – Researchers are learning more about what makes a cloth mask more effective against the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). A new study in the medical journal, Thorax, indicates that layers are essential and that having at least two is better than one layer. Researchers in Australia tested the effectiveness of the CDC recommended one or two layer cloth mask coverings and a three-ply surgical mask. Based on their tests, the researchers said homemade masks should contain multiple layers. Another way to improve a cloth mask is to select one with a pocket that can hold a filter.
