WALLED LAKE, Mich. โ Girl Scout troops in Metro Detroit were reportedly prohibited from selling cookies outside of a marijuana dispensary in Walled Lake, but local organization leaders say that the troops were given false information. Last weekend, Oakland County Girl Scouts were welcomed outside of the Greenhouse of Walled Lake cannabis store by owner Jerry Millen, who authorized the girls to sell cookies outside of his dispensary. Following their successful sales, several more Girl Scout troops asked Millen if they could also sell cookies outside of Greenhouse, which Millen approved. AdโGirl Scouts of Southeastern Michigan (GSSEM) does not have a policy prohibiting troops from selling cookies at or near any legally operating business. The national Girl Scouts organization, Girl Scouts of the USA, does discourage troops from selling at locations where the girls cannot legally enter, however, there is no policy prohibiting selling at such businesses,โ the statement reads.

The book centers around a biracial child who has questions of why her skin is different than her parents. โShe was kind of struggling identifying herself and her mom,โ Nevaeh Tuckerโs father Antonio Tucker said. AdNevaeh Tuckerโs father is Black and her mother is White. Nevaeh and her father hope that children and adults of all races will take the time to read and share the book.

New Oakland County prosecutor shares concerns on rate of murders, unreported child abuse
OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. โ About 20 to 25 murder cases are reported a year in Oakland County, said Karen McDonald, the new county prosecutor. But there have been seven murders reported since December. โIf this trend continues, we are looking at a large amount of homicides,โ McDonald said. AdโI absolutely think it is COVID related,โ McDonald said. AdโWe are trying not to incarcerate individuals that are not a public safety threat for a variety of reasons,โ she said.

Metro Detroit businessman sentenced to 2 years in prison for tax crimes
DETROIT โ A Walled Lake business owner was sentenced to two years in prison on Tuesday, the Department of Justice announced. As the owner of Bayside, Semma was responsible for collecting and paying to the IRS Baysideโs employment taxes. He also did not pay approximately $1.3 million in employment taxes that were due. In 2012, Semma sold The Coliseum for approximately $5.9 million, but did not file an individual income tax return or pay taxes for that year. Semma previously pleaded guilty on Aug. 28, 2019, to one count of employment tax fraud and one count of failure to file his individual income tax return.

Walled Lake Consolidated Schools delays return to in-person learning following security breach
WALLED LAKE, Mich. โ Walled Lake Consolidated Schools has delayed its return to in-person learning following a security breach. According to a letter sent to parents, the districtโs grading and scheduling systems, bus route creation software and other key systems were impacted. This targeted computer hack of Walled Lake Schools was impossible to anticipate and the timing could not have been worse.

Four teens break into Walled Lake Central High School through unsecured roof hatch, police say
COMMERCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. Four teenagers broke into Walled Lake Central High School through a roof hatch early Wednesday morning, according to authorities. The teens -- from Commerce Township, Clarkston, Livonia and Grosse Pointe Farms -- had allegedly entered the school through a roof hatch that had not been completely secured. Officials say the group was in possession of a fire extinguisher that they removed from the school. One of the teens reportedly injured his leg after jumping off of the roof of the school. Officials say the boy was taken to a hospital for treatment and his vehicle was impounded.
Multiple fires caused by lightning across Oakland County
OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. Several Oakland County residents were left without a home due to fires started by lightning strikes Saturday night and Sunday morning. Firefighters in Commerce Township and Walled Lake battled a two-alarm fire at condominiums on Addington Drive near Pontiac Trail, around 9 p.m. The American Red Cross helped several tenants of a Rochester Hills apartment on Galloway Court, near Butler Road Sunday. Fire crews reported they were called at about 5:30 a.m. No injuries were reported. Just hours later, firefighters battled a heavy fire at a home in Bloomfield Township, near Wing Lake Road.
Pandemic wont stop Walled Lake family from raising money to help others
WALLED LAKE, Mich. The coronavirus pandemic has put so many fundraisers on hold with some cancelled all together, but for one Walled Lake family used it as an opportunity. The Drew Crew is a nonprofit that raises money so others with spinal cord injuries can live a more independent lifestyle. But with the pandemic, the Drew Crew saw no safe way to hold their annual fundraising golf tournament. Maybe we should get a storage.Orchard Grove Community Church in Walled Lake gave them a space to keep collecting. The Drew Crew has until Sunday to reach their million can goal.

WALLED LAKE, Mich. The Walled Lake Consolidated Schools district will begin the 2020-21 with remote learning only. The district said the Walled Lake Schools Board of Education voted on Tuesday at its special meeting to adopt the WLCSD Return to Learn Plan. The district will begin the 2020-21 school year online and conduct school with remote learning only until at least Friday, Oct. 30. After reviewing survey data from District parents, survey data from the WLCSD staff, and thousands of survey comments and emails, the Board of Education concluded it is in the best interest of the entire school community to start the school year virtually as to ensure the safety of everyone, reads a statement from the district. Walled Lake Police Department close Mercer Beach due to overcrowding
WALLED LAKE, Mich. Mercer Beach in Walled Lake have been closed down to reduce the transmission of COVID-19, police said. The Walled Lake Police Department said the closure is because the Mercer Beach is consistently overcrowded and unable to operate without violating Governor Whitmers Executive Order 2020-151.The Police Chief determined a closure is necessary to reduce the transmission of COVID-19 to protect Walled Lakes public health and ordered the following:Police officers to close the beach with the necessary barricades until further notice Remove any violators by first issuing a warning. If they fail to comply, officers are authorized to remove/arrest violators under Chapter 50 section 50-33 of the Walled Lake Code of Ordinances. Post signage (Beach Closed by Police Order) at entrance of the beach to notify to the members of the public. Police said failure to cooperate in all of the actions described above is a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment for not more than 90 days or a fine of not more than $500.00, or both.

The district was forced to cut 50 teachers from its budget on Thursday night. The grand opening of the Michigan Air Line Trail, a segment of the Great Lake to Lake Trails-Route 1, has been postponed due to weather conditions, according to trail manager John Hensler. The original ribbon-cutting ceremony was initially scheduled for Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the junction of Air Line and the M-5 Trail, according to a joint release from Commerce Township, Walled Lake and Wixom. Michigan Air Line Trail ribbon-cutting ceremony to take place Nov. 13
The Michigan Air Line Trail, a segment of the Great Lake to Lake Trails-Route 1, will open Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the junction of Air Line and the M-5 Trail, according to a joint release from Commerce Township, Walled Lake and Wixom. Ribbon-cutting ceremony Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. at the the junction of Air Line and the M-5 Trail in Commerce TownshipThe 5.5-mile trail will run from Wixom Road east to Haggerty Road, with eight road crossings. It also features multiple trail entrances and plazas along the route. The Commerce, Walled Lake and Wixom Trailway Management Council oversees the construction of the trail, headed by trail manager John Hensler. The Great Lake to Lake Trails-Route 1 stretches 275 miles from Port Huron to South Haven through 34 communities of farms, small towns and cities.
Walled Lake marijuana safety compliance facility settles with state after license suspended
Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesDETROIT - Iron Laboratories, LLC, a Walled Lake marijuana safety compliance facility that had its license summarily suspended in August, has settled with the Marijuana Regulatory Agency, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Products were recalled in August after testing positive for chemical residue of bifenazate, cadmium, arsenic and chromium. The settlement requires the company to pay a $100,000 fine, update its procedures and provide data and reports to the MRA for a year. "It is imperative that our safety compliance facilities and all of our licensees adhere strictly to the law and the administrative rules. The diligence with which our enforcement team investigated and brought these issues to light demonstrates the commitment that the MRA has in protecting marijuana patients here in Michigan."
