After a string of violence in Downtown Detroit, the city is rolling out new plans to keep the streets safe this summer. The violence included a shooting in Greektown that took the life of a beloved security guard. Loved ones gathered outside the store for a vigil Thursday (April 20).

DETROIT โ Saint Patrickโs Day celebrations in Greektown turned violent Wednesday when two people were stabbed in the middle of a large crowd just as the bars were letting out. Detroit Police are looking for a man they said stabbed two men during a fight in Greektown. โThere was a street brawl and one of the persons involved ended up stabbing one gentleman and another gentleman,โ said Captain Jevon Johnson, with Detroit Police. โWe had officers just one block away that made the scene right away,โ Johnson said. โWe were able to get them the medical attention that they needed.โAdThe video also showed a large crowd with many people not wearing masks nor practicing social distancing.
Detroit police cruiser hits 36-year-old pedestrian in Greektown
DETROIT โ A woman was struck by a Detroit police car in Greektown early Saturday morning. According to authorities, it happened at about 12:40 a.m. on Beaubien Street, near Monroe Street. Police said a 36-year-old woman was crossing the street when she was struck by officers. On Friday night, one of Detroitโs most popular nightlife spots blocked off streets to traffic to make way for more social distancing. Patti Kukula with Delmar Kitchen and Bar in Greektown said the new effort is part of the Greektown Business Partnership Network. โWeโve been really learning how to socially distance and how to make sure everyone is wearing masks when theyโre inside,โ Kukula said. Earlier this week, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced heโs demanding all restaurants and bars enforce social distancing.

Detroit police investigating Greektown arrest for use of excessive force
DETROIT Video of officers with the Detroit Police Department making an arrest in Greektown is being shared on social media. The video shows a woman being manhandled by a Detroit police officer. The officer is seen shoving another woman -- using an obscenity while knocking her to the ground. A spokesperson with the police department told Local 4 that they take all allegations of excessive force or misconduct very seriously. Police said told the woman arrested later bit one of the officers after she was taken into custody.
18 restaurants, bars reopen in Greektown with COVID-19 safety guidelines
In Greektown, 18 restaurants and bars have opened again with coronavirus (COVID-19) safety guidelines in place. Its just like opening a restaurant all over again, said Tasso Teftsis, co-owner of Astoria Pastry Shop and Red Smoke Barbecue. Astoria Pastry Shop reopened Friday, but Red Smoke Barbecue is open for carry-out only. Instead of 350 people tonight, well probably have around 100 people, said Spero Dionysopoulos, co-owner of Golden Fleece and Exodus. While most bars and restaurants in Greektown have reopened or are planning to do so this weekend, Five Guys and Wahlburgers remain closed.

DETROIT Restaurants and bars across the state of Michigan finally got the green light to reopen this week, but one popular business in Detroit still hasnt opened its doors. Many residents were excited to be served, but for some businesses, it wasnt an easy decision. Well, we have had some challenges in calling our staff back to work, co-owner Stephanie Byrd said. Aside from the risks of working, Byrd said when they reopen some bartenders and servers might make less money than they do right now. The plan is to eventually reopen, but the business will start with limited hours and days to make sure it has the staff to keep everyone safe.

DETROIT โ Detroit police arrested two men after a high-powered weapon was found hidden behind an ice maker machine at the Greektown Casino Hotel, Chief James Craig said. Inside the bag was a high-powered weapon, often referred to as a โDraco" -- an AK-47 with a 30-round magazine, Craig said. They linked that person to a specific hotel room and took two young men into custody, Craig said. This was not the suspectsโ first visit to the hotel, according to authorities.
