FDA authorizes Pfizer booster shots for kids 12 to 15
As omicron sprints about the country and coronavirus cases reach record levels, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Monday authorized booster shots or children 12 to 15, expanding the emergency use of the Pfizer vaccine. The FDA also moved to shorten the period between the primary series and the booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine, from six months to five for people 12 and older. The Pfizer vaccine is the only of the three vaccines available in the United States administered to children. Data from multiple laboratories indicate a booster dose of the Pfizer vaccine greatly improves antibody response when faced with the omicron variant. Most children 5 to 11, who just began receiving a smaller dose of the Pfizer vaccine in November, do not need booster doses, according to the FDA.
