28 cases of COVID-19 B117 variant confirmed in Washtenaw, Wayne counties, officials say
LANSING, Mich. โ Michigan has confirmed 28 total cases of the COVID-19 B117 variant in Washtenaw and Wayne counties, according to state officials. Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, chief medical executive of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, said during Gov. โThis variant is more easily spread from person to person,โ Khaldun said. โIf this variant becomes more common, as national experts predict it could, then we could see a very rapid rise in cases and more hospitalizations and deaths.โSo far, 28 cases of the B117 variant have been identified in Michigan, all in Washtenaw and Wayne counties, Khaldun said. The B117 variant, which was traced back to the United Kingdom, has already shut down the entire University of Michigan athletic department.

Washtenaw County calls for patience as next COVID vaccination phase begins
ANN ARBOR, Mich. โ The Washtenaw County Health Department said Monday it is asking for continued patience while COVID-19 vaccine supplies and providers remain limited. If you are now eligible for vaccination, it does not mean vaccination is immediately available to you, the county said in a news release. At least 80,000 more individuals are now eligible for vaccination locally and starting today. โItโs a tremendous relief to add vaccination to the resources we have to prevent COVID-19 from causing additional harm, but this process will take time,โ said Jimena Loveluck, MSW, health officer with Washtenaw County Health Department. National Weather Service issues freeze warning for all of Metro Detroit
DETROIT โ The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning Thursday for most of southeast Michigan from 4 a.m. until 9 a.m. Friday. The freeze warning has been issued for Genesee, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne counties. Temperatures are expected to fall below 32 degrees. The NWS warns it could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and could damage unprotected plumbing.
Invasive aquatic plant found in 4 Michigan inland lakes
LANSING, Mich. An invasive aquatic plant first detected in southeastern Michigan in 1996 has been found in four inland lakes in Washtenaw and Jackson counties. The presence of European frogbit has been confirmed within the Waterloo Recreation Area, according to Michigans Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy. European frogbit resembles a miniature water lily with leaves about the size of a quarter. Since its initial detection in southeastern Michigan, the plant has spread along the coastal areas of lakes Erie and Huron up to the eastern Upper Peninsula. It also has been found in two lakes near Grand Rapids, several small bodies of water in Oakland County and in the Lower Grand River in Ottawa County and Pentwater Lake in Oceana County.
