61-year-old Harrison Township man killed in Macomb County crash
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Officials are investigating a fatal crash involving a pedestrian in Macomb County. Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies were sent to Hall Road and Gratiot Avenue on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. for the report of a crash. Police said Reed Styers, 61, of Harrison Township was killed in the crash. Rise in speeding drivers puts Macomb neighborhood children at risk, residents say
MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Since the coronavirus pandemic began, one Metro Detroit neighborhood saw a dramatic rise in speeding vehicles. Drivers have used the Macomb Township neighborhood as a way to cut through, putting children and families at risk. “But this feels like a main road.”Local 4 Defenders set up a radar gun and caught drivers going way over the speed limit in the neighborhood filled with children. Residents said the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office was asked to patrol the area, but all they did was put up a device to track a vehicle’s speed. Since the Defenders began looking into the problem, the Sheriff’s Office reinstated the radar trailer in the subdivision to gather more data from speeders.

26-year-old woman killed when pickup slides off icy road, strikes tree in Macomb County
BRUCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 26-year-old woman was killed when her pickup truck slid off an icy road and struck a tree in Macomb County, officials said. The crash happened around 6 a.m. Monday in the area of 34 Mile and Fisher roads in Bruce Township, according to the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office. Guilot was heading east on 34 Mile Road, where conditions are very icy, according to deputies. The pickup truck left the roadway and crashed into a tree on the south side of the road, police said. Macomb County deputies are investigating the crash.

2 arrested in Harrison Township after police pursuit down I-94
HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A routine traffic stop turned into a chaotic pursuit on I-94 Thursday morning. According to authorities, Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies made a traffic stop just before 12:30 a.m. on a red Chevrolet pickup truck near Crocker Boulevard and Reimold Road. Police said the truck pulled away as the deputy approached and fled on I-94 eastbound. Police said the suspect began to deliberately ram the deputy vehicles, causing on vehicle to drive off the highway. Storing, a 31-year-old woman from Clinton Township, was arrested for flee and elude, assault with a deadly weapon and possession of heroin.

Sheriff’s office investigating after shots fired near deputies in Mount Clemens
MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich, – Police are investigating after shots were fired near two Macomb County Sheriff’s deputies early Tuesday morning. According to the sheriff’s office, at about 12:25 a.m. two deputies were parked and talking in a parking lot in the area of Gratiot and Cass avenues when they both heard a gunshot in the area. Officials say a second gunshot followed and seemed to cross their vehicles. Officials say it is unclear if the gunshots were fired at the deputies intentionally. The sheriff’s office says the scene has been canvassed and officials have not found anything suspicious at this time.

Man charged in connection to fatal Ray Township hit-and-run crash
RAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Jerel Robinson, 46, was arraigned by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office on two felony counts Thursday. He was taken into custody Wednesday in connection to a fatal hit-and-run crash in Ray Township. The crash happened around 7 a.m. Tuesday in the area of 27 Mile and Romeo Plank roads. Macomb County deputies said Joseph Frank Jaye, 53, of Ray Township, was was riding a bicycle north on Romeo Plank Road toward 27 Mile Road when he was struck by a vehicle. Robinson was charged with failure to stop at the scene of an accident resulting serious impairment or death and failure to stop at the scene of an accident when at fault resulting in death.

Macomb County Sheriff’s Office investigating after traffic radar trailer vandalized
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – A traffic radar trailer in Macomb County was vandalized and is no longer functional, according to officials. Officials said the trailer costs approximately $9,000 to replace. Officials said they receive traffic complaints and put locations of the complaints on a list where they then deploy the trailer. That information is used to help decide which areas are a priority to deploy deputies, officials said. “With the senseless loss of this tool, traffic enforcement will become difficult in residential areas, where our children often play,” officials said in a Facebook post.

Elderly woman crashes into Gumbo’s Restaurant in Macomb County
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – An elderly woman crashed into a Gumbo’s Restaurant on Friday, according to the Macomb County’s Sheriff’s Office. Macomb County Sheriff will enforce Michigan mask requirement, won’t write tickets
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Monday in Michigan marked the first day that Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s new face mask requirement went into effect -- making it a misdemeanor to refuse wearing one in enclosed public spaces. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham is on board with the requirement, urging people to wear face masks and businesses to require them. Whitmer, the department just doesn’t have the resources to respond to every complaint about people not complying with the mask requirement. Hackel believes the new mask requirement is a knee-jerk reaction to recent events, and that it is not democratic. As of Monday, Michigan is reporting 69,722 COVID-19 cases and 6,075 deaths -- and increase of 384 new cases and seven deaths since Sunday.

County sheriff: White Warren police officer did not violate laws during arrest of Black Amazon driver
MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. – The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office determined that a Warren police officer did not violate any laws or policies during their arrest of an Amazon delivery driver in June. Police say the White officer approached the Black Amazon driver and requested the driver’s license 10 times, which the driver did not comply with. The Warren officer involved was placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation led by the county sheriff’s office. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that the Warren police officer did not violate any Michigan criminal laws, nor did they violate any of the city police department’s policies. 2 families rescued from New Haven apartment fire
NEW HAVEN, Mich. – Macomb County Sheriff deputies and the New Haven Fire Department rescued two families from a fire at Pinewood Apartments on Thursday morning. Police say at about 5:50 a.m. a deputy patrolling the apartment complex discovered a unit on fire, called for assistance and began helping residents evacuate the building. Police say the family was evacuated safely but suffered from smoke inhalation and was transported to the hospital. One deputy suffered from severe smoke inhalation and the others are being examined, officials said. Macomb County Sheriff Fire Investigators are investigating the cause of the fire.

Phone scammer posing as member of Macomb County Sheriff’s Office requests money in lieu of arrest

Officials say there have been multiple recent reports of a caller posing as a member of the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office requesting money from residents in lieu of being arrested. The sheriff’s office says the phone calls are not legitimate and warns residents from giving away personal information or meeting up with the caller. Anyone who receives a scam call and is concerned is encouraged to visit the sheriff’s office to verify any arrest warrants in their name. Officials say the Macomb County Detective Bureau is investigating the scam phone calls.

Macomb County Sheriff’s Office warning residents about phone scam
MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – During the past week the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office has taken two reports where citizens have been scammed out of thousands of dollars. Both citizens reported that they received telephone calls from an individual claiming to work for the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office. On Feb. 7, a 33-year-old man from Macomb Township received a call from a male who indicated he was calling from the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office. The caller was also able to ghost the Sheriff’s Office telephone number, meaning that the phone number displayed as a Sheriff’s Office phone number. The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office will not call any member of the public and ask for money or gift cards in lieu of arrest.

Macomb County authorities search for missing 89-year-old man
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Police are looking for an 89-year-old man who was last seen Saturday afternoon. According to authorities, Charles Askia, from Washington Township, was last seen walking alone at about 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Van Dyke Avenue and Stanford Boulevard. Askia does not have a vehicle, and his family believes he doesn't have a phone with him. Police said as he was ordering food, he put the bank bag inside his own bag while the person behind the counter was distracted. Sheriff’s Office identifies man shot, killed by Shelby Township police officer
SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. – The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office has released the identity of a man who was shot and killed Saturday morning by a Shelby Township police officer. The man has been identified as 25-year-old Kanwarbir Malhi, of Shelby Township. The Sheriff's Office said in statement that Malhi was an Asian/Indian man. Shelby Township police say as a result of the man's noncompliance, an officer fired his weapon to stop the man's "aggressive action."
