Roughly 10K tons of contaminated soil removed after U.S. 131 gasoline spill
ROCKFORD, MI – An estimated 10,000 tons of contaminated soil and 100,000 gallons of contaminated groundwater have been removed along U.S. 131 following a traffic crash weeks earlier. A tanker rolled off U.S. 131 near Rockford and spilled thousands of gallons of gasoline. Nearby residential drinking wells so far have not been affected by the spill. County health officials tested four of five nearby residential wells. Wierzbicki said the next steps for state regulators are confirming the clay barrier and potentially installing long-term monitoring wells to detect any migrating water contaminated with gasoline.

KENT COUNTY, MI – The right lane of northbound U.S. 131 from 12 Mile Road NE to the Rogue River will remain closed until Feb. 17 while workers remove contaminated soil from a fuel leak. About 5,000 gallons of fuel spilled Jan. 24 when a truck driver lost control of the tanker on icy roads north of the 10 Mile Road exit. The tanker separated from the cab during the rollover crash.

DETROIT – A Chevrolet Suburban was struck 10 times after someone opened fire on a freeway in Detroit. According to troopers from the Michigan State Police, the shooting occurred on northbound M-39 near 7 Mile Road at 12:40 a.m. on Thursday when another Suburban with an unknown plate pulled up alongside the victim’s vehicle and fired multiple shots. The victim said he observed the suspect vehicle exit the freeway at 7 Mile Road. The victim traveled to Northwestern Highway near 12 Mile Road where he pulled over and called police. The victim was released from the scene and his vehicle was towed to the MSP’s Metro South Post for further investigation.

State to award $4.5 million for municipal water connections in some PFAS-contaminated Kent County areas
ROCKFORD, MI -- Rockford will be awarded a $4.5 million grant to connect some Algoma Township residents with contaminated drinking wells to municipal water. Residents slated to receive a Rockford municipal water connection will be informed by mail and can then call the administrations in Rockford or Algoma for more information. Rockford’s municipal water system has about 7,200 and is tested regularly for contaminants. Some drinking water wells in northern Kent County are contaminated by toxic per- and polyfluorinated compounds called PFAS.
