Kalamazoo ‘Bark in the Park’ event canceled amid parvo outbreak
KALAMAZOO, MI — Dog lovers were looking forward to uniting this week for the Bark in the Park event at Fairmount Dog Park in Kalamazoo, but the event has since been canceled. Kzoo Parks will continue to follow guidance from Kalamazoo County Animal Services and Enforcement for Fairmount Dog Park. According to Kzoo Parks, it has not been advised to close the dog park due to the outbreak. The Fairmount Dog Park recently eliminated their membership fee for the community. To enter the park, dogs must be at least four months, have a valid Kalamazoo County Dog License, and be up-to-date on vaccinations.mlive.com
Dog rescued from garbage truck escaped ‘horrific fate’
LANSING, MI – A “sweet little dog” was lucky to be alive and escaped a “horrific fate” when a man discovered her in a garbage truck this week, officials said. The truck the dog was found in had just finished a commercial dumpster route, the humane society said. “It is almost unbelievable that she endured being transferred from a dumpster, into a garbage truck, and then endured the journey and the unloading process,” the humane society said. “Without his keen eye, she would have certainly suffered a horrific fate.”The dog sustained life-threatening injuries but is now stable and expected to make a full recovery, the humane society said. “We would like to send a very heartfelt thank you to her rescuer, who truly saved her life,” the humane society said.mlive.com
Copperhead swallowed whole in epic backyard snake battle caught on video
An “incessantly” barking dog led an Alabama couple to an epic snake battle in their yard, and it ended with the more dangerous of the two serpents — a copperhead — being swallowed whole. It happened in Camden, Alabama, and video of the epic fight was shared on Facebook by the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division. Michigan state trooper charged with assault for dog attack
LANSING, Mich. – A Michigan State Police trooper has been charged with felonious assault in connection with a traffic stop in which he let his police dog attack a motorist despite no resistance, the agency said Friday. Parker Surbrook was charged following the Nov. 13 traffic stop in Lansing where a passenger was believed to be armed, state police said. Surbrook let his dog attack the driver “for an extended period of time,” police said. Surbrook joined the state police in 2012 and he became a canine handler in 2017. He's been removed from the canine unit and will remain on unpaid suspension while the criminal charge is pending, police said.

It wasn’t the material possessions he was worried about, it was his 1-year-old chihuahua puppy Marble -- who was nowhere to be found. DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – A dog is resting after being rescued from an open manhole. “The owner -- when we arrived on scene -- he was frantic, not being able to get to your dog, the owner broke down,” said Dearborn Heights Fire Marshal, Maxwell Mitts. The Dearborn Heights Fire Department knew it was a race against the clock to get the pup out, once they made it out to the scene. Dog rescued from Detroit River after being stuck on ice for 4 days
ECORSE, MI -- A small dog is recovering at a Michigan animal hospital after he was stranded on the icy Detroit River for four days last week. Patricia Trevino with the River Rouge Animal Shelter watched the dog from afar over the four days as it floated on river ice and other areas along the river in Ecorse, near the John D. Dingell Park, the AP reports. At one point, the dog was chased further onto the ice by coyote, Trevino said. The dog is now being taken care of at the Woodhaven Animal Hospital and updates on the dog’s condition have been posted to the hospital’s Facebook page. Severely injured dog that had leg removed gets multiple adoption offers
LAKE ODESSA, MI -- A dog found severely injured has recovered and is now looking for his forever home. According to the animal sanctuary that helped, the dog is getting a second chance at life. The 1-year-old dog was found last month by local animal control and taken to Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary. The sanctuary staff worked late to alleviate the dog’s pain, before beginning to feed him. Mackenzie’s was able to raise $2,705 of the more than $4,500 needed to cover medical expenses for the dog’s care.mlive.com
Jackson announces plans for first dog park: ‘A space for us to socialize with our furry friends’
The city of Jackson announced its first dog park to be unveiled in spring 2021. Betty’s Dog Park will be located at the corner N. Blackstone and Van Buren streets, replacing the existing Beech Tree Park, the city said in a Dec. 18 news release. The dog park will be fully fenced with separate areas for big and small dogs to roam without a leash. She said she was inspired to help with a dog park project when she saw a man and a dog walking in Beech Tree Park.
