DETROIT -- The quick actions of a group of Detroit Police officers saved the life of a 1-year-old girl over the weekend. According to Fox 2 Detroit, the parents of the baby rushed their child to the 5th precinct Saturday morning around 7:30 a.m. as the child was unresponsive and barely breathing. Kevin Treasvant sprung into action, checking the child for vital signs before administering chest compressions. Once the child regained consciousness, two other officers rushed the baby to nearby St. Johns Hospital while other officers cleared the roads to ensure she got there as fast as possible. Police Chief James What called the officers โ€œheroesโ€ and said they exemplify the department as a whole.

DETROIT -- Prosecutors have charged two Detroit residents in the murder of 55-year-old Michelle Oโ€™Neal, also of Detroit, whose body was found in a wooded area last month. Smith is facing charges of one count of first-degree murder, one count of felon in possession and two counts of felony firearm. Burgess faces one count of first-degree murder, one count of felony firearm, one count of tampering with evidence and one count of third-degree arson. On July 12, around 5 p.m., Detroit Police were called to the intersection of Hyde and Helen where they discovered Oโ€™Nealโ€™s body with a gunshot wound to the head. Prosecutors allege that Smith and Burgess put the body in the wooded area before fleeing the scene.

Michigan Will Borrow $600M For Flint Water Settlement

LANSING, Mich. (AP) โ€” Michigan lawmakers on Wednesday planned to begin swiftly passing a plan to borrow $600 million to fund the stateโ€™s proposed settlement with the residents of Flint, who sued after their municipal water supply was contaminated with elevated levels of lead for 18 months. It is believed to be the state governmentโ€™s largest-ever legal settlement, pending approval from a federal judge. Flint switched its drinking water source in 2014 from Detroitโ€™s system to the Flint River in a money-saving move while under supervision of a state financial manager. click to enlarge Rusty YoungOn Wednesday, Detroit Police warned the driver of the Trump Unity Bridge that he had an invalid license plate. On Friday, he was arrested. Though it was festooned with Blue Lives Matter flags, the "Trump Unity Bridge" โ€” a sort of-esque roving shrine to President Donald Trump that is the creation of Michigan man Rob Cortis โ€” was impounded in Detroit on Friday. Cortis was also arrested by Detroit Police.Apparently Cortis was riding dirty.According to WWJ's Vickie Thomas , the Trump Unity Bridge had an invalid license plate, and Cortis, of Livonia, had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Canton for a charge of disturbing the peace. Police warned him on Wednesday not to return to Detroit, which was captured by photographer Rusty Young and shared withOn Friday, Cortis returned and was taken into custody by police.We guess he didn't get the memo that Trump was supposed to be the "law and order" president.Trump supporters have been gathering in Detroit outside the TCF Center, which was converted into a ballot processing facility, to intimidate election workers.The Trump Unity Bridge has been spotted at political events and rallies across the country since 2016.

Police sniper kills barricaded gunman who held girlfriend hostage

DETROIT โ€“ A Detroit Police sniper fired a single shot over the weekend to end a barricaded gunman situation that was becoming more violent and posed a serious threat to the hostageโ€™s life, the Detroit Free Press reports. The situation on Detroitโ€™s east side ended Friday night with the shooting of the 42-year-old gun who had taken his girlfriend hostage that afternoon, Detroit Police Chief James Craig said Saturday. The gunman, who has a violent history, suffered a mental health crisis after not taking medication to treat bipolar disorder for 48 hours, the report said. It was the 28th barricaded gunman situation this year โ€“ half of those stemmed from mental illness, Craig said. Craig called for increased mental health funding to address this โ€œpublic safety concern,โ€ but not at the expense of police cuts.

Suspects accused of shooting assault rifle at Michigan police

DETROIT โ€“ An assault rifle was fired at Detroit Police officers on Thursday, Oct. 15, as they investigated suspicious vehicles on the cityโ€™s west side. The officers were not injured, FOX 2 Detroit reports. The incident ended with the arrests of six suspects. Officers were investigating suspected commercial auto theft when the vehicle occupants began shooting at them with at least one assault rifle, the report said. After firing multiple shots, the suspects fled the scene.
