DETROIT โ A man was fatally shot in front of a Michigan elementary school on Wednesday, Jan. 4, and no one called 911, WXYZ Detroit reports. Detroit Police officers were alerted to the incident by the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system, the report said. Evidence found at the scene suggests at least 20 rounds were fired toward the school, hitting the victim and causing damage to the building, the report said. Students were not in the building at the time of the shooting; they are still on winter break. The family of Porter Burks, 22, told police that Burks was in a mental health crisis and he was armed with a knife. Officers found Burks in the area of Snowden near Lyndon, standing in the middle of a street. The video, shown by police during a press conference Tuesday, Oct. 4, shows officers approach Burks and offer him help. The officer were trying to negotiate with him and, without provocation, he charged the officer(s) with a knife in hand,โ White said.

Detroit Police Lt. Clive Stewart told Fox 2 that he believes the kids are working for someone older that is convincing the children to commit carjackings because the legal ramifications will be less severe on children their age. Stewart also said in his years of police work, an 11-year-old is the youngest heโs ever seen that was involved in a carjacking. The identities of the children involved have not been released and formal charges have also not been announced.

According to Fox 2 Detroit, the parents of the baby rushed their child to the 5th precinct Saturday morning around 7:30 a.m. as the child was unresponsive and barely breathing. Kevin Treasvant sprung into action, checking the child for vital signs before administering chest compressions. Once the child regained consciousness, two other officers rushed the baby to nearby St. Johns Hospital while other officers cleared the roads to ensure she got there as fast as possible.
