Make colorful dyed eggs naturally with items from your kitchen
When you were a kid, did you get excited when parents bought you an egg coloring kit, and you pulled out the colorful tablets to make beautifully dyed eggs? There might be a way to color your eggs with items found in your kitchen. Kila Peeples tried to dye eggs using Turmeric powder, red onion skins, and beet juice. The process is similar to how you use the coloring kits, but does it create colorful dyed eggs as well as the kits do? Watch the video above to see if dyeing eggs with food items worked.
Could this be your new, old-school cleaning friend?
It is time to start spring cleaning our homes, and why not find a good cleaner that has a history of doing a good job? Bon Ami Original cleaner (in the red can) has been used in households since 1886. Feldspar was something that we have tried before in a previous Try It Out Tuesday with Fels Naptha. Kila Peeples tried the cleaner out on a couple of areas around her home, including her windows, kitchen sink and a marker stain on her dining room table. Try these cool tricks with your phone’s flashlight
Sometimes you watch a crime or survival show and wonder, how do people do certain things using everyday items? How do they make a black light to look for clues, DNA, or germs? Kila Peeples took on the challenge to see if she could make a DIY black light, and a lamp out of a water bottle, with a little help from her cell phone flashlight. Did she find the germs with the black light, or light up the night with her new lamp? Watch the video above to see Kila try it out!
Can this cleaning gel help tidy up your car?
The weather is getting warmer, which means that we need to start cleaning off that winter dust. Why not start with your car? With all of the sunshine that we’ve been having the past few days seems to highlight the fact that our car interiors may need a little T.L.C. Kila Peeples found a popular cleaning gel called TiCarve, that looks like a kid’s toy, but is supposed to be great for cleaning multiple places in your car. Make a birthday cake in five minutes in the microwave? Here’s how to do it!
If you need a last minute cake or if you want to have a little fun with the kids, there is a way to make a birthday cake that cooks in just five minutes. Kila Peeples tried the recipe out, to see if this was a birthday wish, or a birthday blowout. 5-minute Birthday Cake:For the cake¾ stick softened butter½ cup sugar¼ cup room temp yogurt¾ cup room temp milk1 cup all purpose flour2 tsp baking powder1 tsp vanilla extractDirections:Sift together dry ingredients. Pour the mixture into a microwave safe container, lined with parchment paper, and cook in the microwave for 5 minutes on high. If after 5 minutes the cake hasn’t finished baking, continue to bake it until done.
Tackle the fur Fido and Fluffy leave on your furniture
We love our pets, but sometimes they can leave a furry mess on your furniture and carpet. It is called Fur-Zoff, and is made from foamed glass that resembles a pumice stone that you would use for a pedicure. Kila tried it on her couch and her area rug, while the pets who caused the furry mess watched with curiosity. Did Fur-Zoff work on her fur covered furniture? Are these lipsticks smooch-proof?
Many are planning a romantic (at-home) date for Valentine’s Day, and one way to show your love is to seal it with a kiss. But, what if your lipstick leaves more than a lasting mark than the kiss? Kila Peeples found an article that claimed there are lipsticks that are non-transferable, a.k.a kiss-proof. She tried two of them to see if the make-up stayed put on her lips or left a kiss print. Did the lipstick stay on her lips?
Will these tools give you the perfect winged eye look?
However, when you do it, the desired look comes out looking... less than desirable. The winged eye is a classic look that has been a staple in the fashion industry, now you can get the look too with easy. Kila Peeples tried a winged eye stamp that she found online to get the hot look. She also tried another way with something that you would normally wear in your hair. Make baking healthier with this surprising substitute
Almost everyone promises to eat healthier at the beginning of a new year, but sometimes that sweet tooth will cry out for a treat. Is there a way to enjoy sweets, like a slice of cake or a cupcake, and still stay on the healthy path? Kila Peeples found a way to still have a baked goods, but you swap out the eggs and oil for a healthy, savory fruit. Kila made cupcakes using store-bought cake mix, but instead of using the three eggs and vegetable oil, she used one large avocado. Watch the video above to see if Jason Carr and Tati Amare can taste the difference between cupcakes baked traditionally or with an avocado.
Need some help getting in shape? Try a fitness app!
Many of us probably consumed more food and drinks than anticipated this holiday season, and throughout 2020. Getting back into healthy eating and working out can be tough, so why not get a little help from a fitness app? Kila Peeples tried two free mobile apps, My Fitness Pal and Lose It! She also used a FitBit, which helps with staying active and monitors your sleep patterns, which can affect your metabolism. Watch the video above to see how the apps worked for Kila.
Does this old-school soap’s cleaning power stand the test of time?
Doing the laundry is a task that always seems to be a never-ending chore, but there is something that has risen to the cleaning occasion for hundreds of years. Fels Naptha is a soap that was created in 1893, yet has recently grown in popularity. Kila Peeples tried the soap out on stains like chocolate, lipstick and red wine. Watch the video above to see if it worked!
This pan can cook multiple dishes at once. Does it work?
Sometimes when you are cooking, you might feel like you have every pan going at once. For this Try It Out Tuesday, Kila Peeples cooked breakfast using a divided cast iron pan. Here’s a holiday twist for your morning coffee
This week’s Try It Out Tuesday had us finding new ways to enjoy an iconic holiday candy that you may have a lot of around the house right now. Kila Peeples found a couple of ways to upcycle candy canes, by including them in her favorite morning drink. She found recipes to make homemade coffee creamer and syrup using crushed candy canes. Not only did Kila have fun preparing the candy canes (crushing them was a great stress reliever), but making the syrup and creamer wasn’t as hard as she thought it would be. Watch the video above to see how Kila’s syrup and coffee creamer turned out!
Run out of powdered sugar? Don’t stop baking, make your own!
You’re baking away in the kitchen and you run out of powdered sugar. You’ve got cookies in the oven and you can’t run to the store! Kila Peeples discovered a way to get more of your key ingredient using two items that you can find in your pantry. Put a half cup of regular sugar in a mixer, along with a tablespoon of cornstarch and mix for about five minutes. Kila tried this out and then made two batches of frosting, one with store-bought powdered sugar, and another with the sugar she made.
Boost your holiday spirit with this DIY craft
As we prepare for the holiday season, why not do it with some fun crafts?! Kila Peeples found a cute and, surprisingly easy, way to decorate your home using something that you would normally use in your kitchen. All you need are hand towels, lots of cotton balls, and a hot glue gun. In a few short minutes, you will have a beautiful holiday pillow; great to put up on your mantel or on your couch. Watch the video above to see how to make the pillows and a smart tip you can use if you run out of cotton balls.
Have some family (and a little messy) fun with baking soda
With everyone being in the house for the next three weeks, parents will be looking for ways to entertain their kids. Of course there are board games, video consoles, and TV, but why not get a little creative with the fun? For this week’s Try It Out Tuesday, Kila Peeples showed how you can enjoy quality family time with baking soda and other household items. Peeling this pesky vegetable can be frustrating, and quite fragrant. Garlic cloves can be tricky to open, but Kila Peeples found a few ways to peel them perfectly. For this week’s Try It Out Tuesday, she tried a traditional way to peel garlic by smashing it with a kitchen utensil, another way by shaking the entire bulb in a mason jar, and finally, by putting the bulb in the microwave for 20 seconds. These hot chocolate bombs have a sweet surprise
Drop a bomb on the cold weather with a new hot drink trend. A piping hot mug of hot chocolate is always nice when it’s freezing outside, and now there is a sweet way to have some fun with it. Hot chocolate bombs are the new popular way to enjoy the sweet drink. It’s a hollow chocolate ball filled with hot chocolate mix and marshmallows or even flavored instant coffee.
